A Message from Executive Director Keni Sturgeon on Diversity, Inclusion and Equity
For more than a week, the world has seen on display the full anguish and anger of people across the United States as we face the concurrent crises of pervasive racism and associated police violence and of the COVID-19 pandemic. Both crises have disproportionally impacted Black, Latinx, Native American, and People of Color individuals and communities, and both crises are calling needed attention to deep-rooted systemic inequities in our country and communities.
The Wenatchee Valley Museum & Cultural Center stands in solidarity with the people in Wenatchee, in our state, country, and around the world appealing for an end to racism, inequality, brutality and fear. We commit to serving as a place of inclusion, diversity and equity for everyone in our community and beyond.
Museums are institutions, but they are made up of people. We at the Wenatchee Valley Museum & Cultural Center are here with you, navigating our anger, fears, and shared heartbreak, while we tend to loved ones and our community.
I know this statement from me is overdue. As someone whose family is multiracial, and whose brother and nephews face racism and fear daily as African Americans in our country, I’ve been struggling to be there for him, his wife and their children, as well as for my staff as best I can. This week, I am inspired by the words of Lonnie Bunch, former Director of the National Museum of African American History and Culture and current Secretary of the Smithsonian, “Will we heed the call of courageous figures throughout history who spoke out against slavery, marched on for voting rights, and sat in for basic equality? Will we challenge the nation to live up to its founding ideals? In the memory of those taken from us and for the good of the country, I hope that we do.”
At the Wenatchee Valley Museum & Cultural Center, we believe in the importance of diversity, inclusion, and access and are seeking out new roles and responsibilities to promote meaningful conversations on social issues that matter. We strive to provide a safe place for all people and families regardless of race, gender, economic situation, or sexual orientation.
During these dynamic times of civil unrest we encourage you to have conversations, particularly with your children, about racial inequalities. These resources may help you in these conversations.

Durante más de una semana, el mundo ha visto la angustia y la frustración de las personas en todo los Estados Unidos al enfrentar las crisis concurrentes de racismo generalizado y la violencia policial asociada y también la pandemia de COVID-19. Ambas crisis han impactado desproporcionadamente a individuos y comunidades de la gente de color, latinos, nativos americanos, y ambas crisis están llamando la atención necesaria a las inequidades sistémicas profundamente arraigadas en nuestro país y nuestras comunidades.
El Wenatchee Valley Museum & Cultural Center se solidariza con la gente de Wenatchee, en nuestro estado, país y en todo el mundo, pidiendo el fin del racismo, la desigualdad, la brutalidad y el miedo. En memoria de los que nos han quitado y por el bien del país, espero que lo hagamos”.
