SUMMARY:Images of America: Cascadian Hotel Author Talk
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we talk to the authors of Images of America: Cascadian Hotel live on Zoom on Thursday\, November 12 at 6 PM. The authors will discuss historic events tied to the Cascadian Hotel\, their research process\, and more! This talk is free\, but registration is required. Please register to receive the Zoom log-in information. \nREGISTER HERE\nBook Description: \nOn August 9\, 1929\, the Cascadian Hotel opened in Wenatchee\, Washington\, the “Apple Capital of the World.” It was (and still is) the tallest building in town. The opening ceremony—featuring a human spider scaling the facade—celebrated the coming to town of a technologically innovative and luxurious hotel that\, for its 42-year existence\, prided itself on quality service. The Cascadian had very strong ties to the community\, apple themes ran throughout the building\, and for years it was the go-to meeting place in Wenatchee. The hotel also served as the starting point for the hospitality careers of several men and women who rose to executive leadership positions in the international Western (later Westin) Hotels chain. \nAuthor Description: \nHelen J. Knowles is an associate professor of political science at the State University of New York–Oswego. This book developed out of her research for Making Minimum Wage: Elsie Parrish Versus the West Coast Hotel Company\, which tells the story of a US Supreme Court case involving the Cascadian. That book will be published by the University of Oklahoma Press in 2021. \nL. Darlene Spargo is the author of three books on local history. Images used come from numerous libraries and private collections.

SUMMARY:Day of the Dead Altars: History\, Traditions\, and How-to Build Your Own
DESCRIPTION:Join us virtually on Tuesday\, October 20th at 7 PM for a free Pybus University class on Day of the Dead Altars. Pybus Public Market offers a series of unique and fun classes for the general public.\n\n  \nIn the past the Wenatchee Valley Museum & Cultural Center\, has invited members of our community to either create their own Día de los Muertos altar or to bring photographs in honor of lost loved ones to the Museum on the day of the event to display on a Community Altar. Things may look a little different this year but everyone is encouraged to participate in the celebration at home. Ashley Sinner along with Terry Valdez and Miguel Jimenez will present a family-friendly lesson on Altars. You will learn a little of the history and traditions behind the Día de los Muertos Altar and receive instructions on how to build your own with items you have around the house. The night will include a chance to ask questions and comment and chat about this special holiday. \nThis class will be presented by Ashley Sinner\, the Outreach & Public Relations Coordinator at the Wenatchee Valley Museum & Cultural Center\, local artist Terry Valdez\, and CVCH IT Technical Support Specialist Miguel Jimenez. \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Salmon Bake - A Virtual Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Join us virtually as Wenatchi/P’squosa elder Randy Lewis presents a traditional blessing of water and salmon. One of the Plateau tribes’ most significant ceremonies is the First Salmon Feast\, marking the arrival of salmon to traditional fishing grounds. Lewis\, the great-great-grandson of Sam Miller\, founder of the Miller-Freer Trading Post\, the anchor to the original City of Wenatchee\, will retell origin stories related to the Creator’s calling of a grand council of the plants and animals to help feed and care for the newest of creations: humans. \nWenatchee Valley Museum members are invited to participate in a feast of salmon\, part of the traditional tribal religion in the Columbia Basin that reinforces the central role salmon and water play for Columbia Basin tribal people in your own home.  With a series of videos\, we will lead you through building a traditional fire pit as well as preparing and cooking the salmon.  Randy will then present the traditional blessing live and you are invited to participate via Zoom. \nYou decide on how much or how little you would like to participate\, whether you go all out and build the fire pit or just cook the fish in your oven\, you won’t want to miss Randy’s retelling of the origin story or the moving and sacred blessing of water and salmon. The live blessing will take place at 3:00 pm on Saturday\, October 17th. \nThe videos and Zoom link will be sent in separate emails. \nPlease register here: 61981.blackbaudhosting.com/61981/Salmon-Bake-Virtual and the videos will be sent to you.  The live ceremony will be held on October 17 at 3:00 pm.  A Zoom link will be sent in a separate email.

SUMMARY:Social Justice Series: Health Disparities and COVID-19
DESCRIPTION:Racial and economic disparities in health care are known factors contributing to higher morbidity and mortality among those with lower income\, and black\, indigenous\, and people of color (BIPOC)\, as compared to white Americans. These disparities have a dual impact – not only are they resulting in differences in the actual care and treatment that COVID-19 patients receive\, but they also put people in BIPOC communities at higher risk of contracting COVID-19 in the first place. Join a panel of local community members on Friday\, August 7 at 12 PM on Zoom and from the Museum’s Facebook page on Facebook Live. Questions may be submitted in advance to info@wvmcc.org\, or live via Zoom Q&A\, Zoom Chat\, or FB Live. Live Spanish translation will be provided by Clarius Languages\, to access this feature participants need to log-in with the Zoom log-in and select the Spanish audio channel under the world icon.  \n\n\nPanelists\n\nKimberly Steensma\, ARNP\, Columbia Valley Community Health \nDr. Ashley Simpson\, D.D.S. \nJorge Rivera\, Associate Vice President\, Director\, Community Engagement\, Molina Healthcare of WA \nDr. Bindu Nayak\, MD\, Endocrinology\, Co-chair of Health Equity\, Diversity and Inclusion council\, Confluence Health \nDr. Mabel A Bodell\, MD\, Nephrologist/Transplant Nephrologist\, Co-chair of Health Equity\, Diversity and Inclusion council\, Confluence Health \nKeith Howard\, Attorney\, Northwest Justice Project \n \n\nZOOM LOGIN INFORMATION:\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/86909320004 \nOr iPhone one-tap :\nUS: +12532158782\,\,86909320004# or +13462487799\,\,86909320004#\nWebinar ID: 869 0932 0004 \nZoom instructions: Before joining a Zoom meeting on a computer or mobile device\, you can download the FREE Zoom app. Otherwise\, you will be prompted to download and install Zoom when you click a join link.
