SUMMARY:Film & Speaker Series: Bad People and Good Ol’ Boys - The Criminalization of Rural Disadvantage
DESCRIPTION:The 2025-26 Film and Speaker Series presents: Bad People and Good Ol’ Boys – The Criminalization of Rural Disadvantage  \nWashington State University (WSU) Professor of Sociology Dr. Jennifer Sherman’s invites you to explore the criminal justice system within rural communities on Thursday\, Feb. 12\, at 6 PM. \nIf you live in a rural area and commit a crime\, your social standing plays a huge role in your ability to recover. Drawing on research from Central and Eastern Washington\, this talk explores how the social dynamics in rural communities play an outsized role in how a person is treated after an entanglement with the law.  \nParticularly in small towns\, where word can travel fast of an arrest\, judgement and stigma can undermine social relations and create barriers to securing work and housing. Yet those same dynamics can also give some people a pass—your local reputation can make it easier for some to regain their standing in the community. \nJoin professor Jennifer Sherman as she asks questions including: Why do we define criminality in the ways we do? And are there more effective ways to keep our communities safe and support vulnerable people? \nAdmission is free for members and $5 for non-members. Registration is recommended. \nREGISTER HERE \nFunds from this event support the Museum’s mission-serving programs\, including featured exhibits\, MakerSpace\, robotics clubs\, field trips\, student scholarships\, community cultural events\, film and speaker series\, and collection restorations.  \nThe 2025-26 Film & Speaker Series is supported by the City of Wenatchee and the City of East Wenatchee.

SUMMARY:Wenatchee Valley Erratics: Geology and the Growth of BNSF's Cascade Tunnel
DESCRIPTION:Join the Wenatchee Valley Erratics Chapter on Tuesday\, February 10\, at 6 PM at the Wenatchee Valley Museum & Cultural Center for a presentation from Bill Bugel about geology and the growth of BNSF’s Cascade Tunnel. \n \nThe Synergy of the Development of the Science of Geology with the Growth of the Railroad Industry plus a Short Description of BNSF’s Cascade Tunnel’s Ventilation System \nThe advent of the Industrial Revolution brought about the development of the science of geology which was followed closely by the growth of the railroad industry.  A quick look at both of these disciplines over the past 200 years reveals a fascinating back and forth which resulted in amazing advances for both.  For instance\, geologists found the coal and then the railroads transported this coal to locations where people worked and lived. And coal mines virtually dictated where the rail line should be built.   Comparisons between the two efforts continue to the present day with Bill outlining current challenges.   \nBack in 1995\, Bill was heavily involved in the installation of a new ventilation system for BNSF’s Cascade Tunnel. He’ll spend the last 10 minutes of this lecture describing how BNSF ensures safe operations through the longest railroad tunnel in the United States.   \nJOIN THIS PRESENTATION VIA ZOOM: \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/81855547958\n\nMeeting ID: 818 5554 7958

SUMMARY:Navigating Untold Stories: A Historical Fiction Workshop
DESCRIPTION:How did W.T. “Bill” Clark feel when he returned to Wenatchee dirt poor in the spring of 1933\, nearly thirty years after irrigating our Valley? What did the tense conversations sound like\, as the passenger train moved in and out of a smoke-filled Wellington tunnel\, some deciding to hike out in waist-deep snow before the deadly 1910 avalanche fell? What did David Thompson think to himself as he navigated the pre-dammed Columbia\, floating for the first time into what is now present-day Wenatchee?  \nExplore local stories from our shared past at the Wenatchee Valley Museum & Cultural Center\, with local English instructor\, Zach Eddy\, and learn new techniques to help guide you to a place of discovery\, while you navigate the blurry line between fiction and non-fiction. Discover what stories hide in the gaps of the historical record. What dark truths remain uncovered? Explore who gets to tell the stories and why they matter today.  \nIf you attended this class before\, this will be a whole new adventure. Don’t hesitate to register anew!  \nZach Eddy received his MFA in Poetry at the University of Idaho. His writing has appeared in High Desert Journal\, Northwest Review\, The Confluence Magazine\, and elsewhere. He teaches English composition and creative writing at Wenatchee Valley College\, and he is the operations coordinator for the Wenatchee Valley Museum & Cultural Center.   \nThis workshop is $10 for museum members and students. It is $20 for non-members. \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER FOR THIS WORKSHOP \n
