SUMMARY:Basket Weaving Workshop
DESCRIPTION:  \nLen Sherrard – Nature’s Needles \nJoin pine needle basket maker Len Sherrard for a two-day workshop to learn his craft. Sherrard’s contemporary baskets include found objects like stones and antlers as well as gourds. His vibrant work also incorporates beads and dyed threads along with pine needles and other natural materials in the traditional coiling method. \nIn the first day of the workshop\, Sherrard will lead the group through the process of making a gourd and pine needle vessel. On day two the project will start with a stone centerpiece and the pine needle coils will grow into a basket from there. All materials are provided and instruction will be fun and upbeat. Sherrard’s boisterous personality will make this an entertaining and educational workshop. All materials and supplies are provided and all skill levels and experience are welcome. Lunch is included. \nThis workshop will take place in the museum’s Maker Space on November 3rd & 4th from 9 am until 3:30 pm. This workshop is limited to 10 individuals. DESCRIPTION:Award-winning journalist Andy Dappen shares the story of two Alaskan canoe trips undertaken by Dappen and his equally adventurous brother Alan. The first\, undertaken in 1974 with a group of college buddies\, was a 6-week trip spanning 800 miles of coastal waterways in wood-strip canoes constructed by the Dappen brothers. It was cut short in Ketchikan when half of the crew bailed before making the planned final stop at Juneau. SUMMARY:Tule Mat Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The museum will host an all-day weaving workshop led by Wanapum elder and master weaver Angela Buck. The workshop with feature the versatile tule\, or bulrush\, as raw material\, to create a sitting mat that can be used for yoga\, picnics or even as an insulating layer on the dining room table. Wanapum tribal elders skilled in the art of tule weaving lead the class. \nHistorically\, the Wanapum\, or River People\, created houses out of mats made from the tall reed that grows abundantly in local ponds\, springs and sloughs. The mats were used to cover winter log houses and summer tepees as well as mattresses\, table mats\, ceremonial sitting mats and burial mats. \nThe tule plant’s unique Styrofoam-like core makes an excellent insulating material and was used by Columbia Plateau indigenous peoples for hundreds of years as a natural air-conditioning system. The plant swelled with moisture during rainy\, wet times to seal gaps in the mats and form an insulating roof. On hot\, dry days the reeds in the mats would shrink allowing cooling breezes to filter into the lodging. \nAll materials are provided and all skill levels are welcomed. Lunch is included. Cost is $100 per person.

SUMMARY:Rock Island Rapids of the Columbia – Talk with William Layman and Randy Lewis
DESCRIPTION:While Edward Curtis’ mission was to document the lives of American Indians\, Wenatchee’s own Columbia River Archaeological Society focused on a singular island\, destined to disappear behind the Columbia’s first dam in 1931.  Rock Island rapids was one of the great fisheries of the Columbia – a place of deafening sound that shook you to the bone.  To Native Peoples\, the island was and remains holy\, made sacred by generations of Ancestors who traveled across the river’s swift channels to seek life-altering visions. \nJoin William Layman and Randy Lewis to watch Rock Island re-emerge before your eyes\, through Layman’s use of photographs\, maps and narratives that allow viewers to walk the island’s contours and see its many petroglyphs and other interesting island features. Lewis’ commentary will shed light on how Native Americans knew the island and how they regard it presently.  The rewards are great; offering new ground that gives regional residents\, Indian and non-Indian alike\, the ability to more deeply appreciate and inhabit this extraordinary river we call home. \nThis co-led presentation is designed to engage both heart and mind. \nWilliam Layman has actively been reflecting and contemplating the island\, its rapids and petroglyphs since moving to Wenatchee in 1979. His research is informed by long-standing relationships with Native Elders\, who through his work are able to better know the original free-flowing river.  In 2008 Layman co-curated WVMCC’s exhibit\, River of Memory: The Everlasting Columbia which traveled throughout the Pacific Northwest and was featured by the Royal British Columbia Museum and the Washington State Historical Society. \nRandy Lewis (Wenatchi/P’Squosa)  holds a vast storehouse of oral tradition that chronicles the stories of Indian people living in the Mid-Columbia region. Beyond\, Lewis is a highly celebrated organizer and leader of Pacific Northwest tribes who for years has been at the forefront of speaking for and empowering larger PNW Indian communities. Randy’s words are often highly entertaining but beneath them resides a serious and caring heart that knows well the cultural trauma suffered by his people. The specific knowledge he shares about Rock Island reflects his close boyhood relationship with his teacher/grandfather\, Jerome Miller\, who fished the island’s banks and passed the knowledge and responsibility of Rock Island’s stories over to his grandson. DESCRIPTION:Join Native American elder Randy Lewis for a traditional blessing of water and salmon at the opening of the Edward S. Curtis exhibit. One of the Plateau tribes’ most significant ceremonies is the First Salmon Feast\, marking the arrival of salmon to traditional fishing grounds. Lewis will retell origin stories related to the Creator’s calling of a grand council of the plants and animals to help feed and care for the newest of creations: humans. Following a prayer of thanksgiving\, guests are invited to participate in a feast of salmon\, part of the traditional tribal religion in the Columbia Basin that reinforces the central role salmon and water play for Columbia Basin tribal people. Lewis is the great-great grandson of Sam Miller\, founder of the Miller-Freer Trading Post\, the anchor to the original City of Wenatchee.

DESCRIPTION:Jim O’Connor of the United States Geological Survey (USGS)\, one of the preeminent experts on the Missoula Floods\, and Brent Cunderla will be your guides on a tour focused on the ice age floods and glaciation in the Columbia River Valley from Moses Coulee to Pateros. The tour\, slated for 9 am to 5 pm Saturday\, Oct. 6 begins and ends at the Wenatchee Valley Museum & Cultural Center. \nTopics for the tour include the Missoula and other floods and the relationship of these floods to the landscape of the Columbia River Valley\, Moses and Grand coulees. The history of the Okanogan glacial lobe of the Cordilleran Ice Sheet will be highlighted. \nO’Connor majored in Geological Sciences at the University of Washington and earned an M.S. and Ph.D. degrees at the University of Arizona. Since 1991\, he has worked at the USGS\, intent on improving understanding of the processes and events that shape the remarkable and diverse landscapes of the Pacific Northwest. His primary research and writing activities center on stream channel and floodplain processes\, glaciers\, floods\, debris flows\, landslides\, geologic and hydrologic hazards and the history of geology. \nO’Connor is a current member of the American Geophysical Union\, the Geological Society of American\, and has served on the Pima County Flood Control Advisory Board\, the Hatfield Science Team. He is the current editor of Quaternary Research. The journal’s scope is global\, building on its nearly 50-year history in advancing the understanding of earth and human history through interdisciplinary study of the last 2.6 million years. \nA leader in scientific geology studies\, O’Connor received the USGS Director’s Award recognizing his work in landslide response\, the USGS Excellence in Science Award and received a Fulbright Fellowship for work in U.S.-Spain Cooperative Science in 2000. His academic publications are numerous\, including six pages of professional citations.

DESCRIPTION:As a naturalist\, author\, and conservationist\, Mardy Murie was an ordinary American who was an exceptional advocate for wilderness and is now known as the mother of the American Conservation movement. She and her husband\, Olaus\, worked as advocates for wilderness conservation and were instrumental in the establishment of the Artic National Wildlife Refuge Act and the passage of the Wilderness Act. SUMMARY:Railroad History Tour
DESCRIPTION:On March 1\, 1910\, the deadliest avalanche in North American history swept down the snowy Cascades\, burying two trains and killing 96 people. The Wenatchee Valley Museum is offering a guided tour of the Wellington site from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday\, Sept. 8. The tour also will visit several other sites between Leavenworth and Stevens Pass that played important roles in the history of the Great Northern Railway Company. \nTour goers will meet at the Wenatchee Valley Museum at 9 a.m. to board a tour bus. The bus will then will travel west on U.S. Highway 2\, stopping for discussion at different points of interest. The final stop will be the interpretive site at Wellington\, where participants will have lunch and take a half-mile walk around the area of the disaster. \n$45\, $40 members

DESCRIPTION:Pipe organ concert with sing-a-longs and silent film\, featuring organist Sharon Stearnes.\n$5 suggested donation \n \nABOUT THE ORGANIST\, SHARON STEARNES\n\nSharon was staff organist at the Tacoma Pizza & Pipes starting in 1983. She played there for 16 years before the restaurant was lost in a fire in August 1999. She also played at the Bellevue Pizza & Pipes restaurant from 1987-1992 and at the Seattle Pizza & Pipes from 1984 until it closed in about 1989. \nSharon was the organist for the Seattle Mariners from 1985-1990. \nShe currently works for Aflac as an Associate Sales Coordinator and plays the organ at the Gig Harbor United Methodist Church \n\n\nABOUT THE ORGAN\nSince the organist first accompanied the musical comedy Chin Chin during the grand opening of Wenatchee’s Liberty Theater in December of 1919\, the museum’s Liberty Theater Wurlitzer Pipe Organ has provided entertainment and wonderful memories for generations of theatergoers and museum visitors. Originally installed to provide sound effects and music for silent films and vaudeville performances\, even after the introduction of “talkies” in the late 1920s organists continued to play musical interludes during stage productions\, matinees and other events well into the 1940s. The organ was moved to the museum in 1988-89. With its 10 ranks of pipes and two keyboards\, the Liberty Theater Pipe Organ can reproduce the sounds of a full orchestra and a large number of special effects. From auto horns to xylophone — a variety of instruments and sounds including clarinet\, bass drums\, cymbals\, sleigh bells and horses’ hoof beats are at the fingertips of the organist. The wooden shutters above the chamber windows open and close\, providing volume control and emphasis to the particular sounds from each chamber. \n\n  \n

DESCRIPTION:On behalf of the board of directors\, we would like to invite you to meet our top two candidates for the Executive Director’s Position: Matthew Cadman\, Ed.D. and Keni S. Sturgeon\, M.A. We are encouraging all members to attend a public “Meet and Greet” at the Museum on Thursday\, August 23 at 5:30 pm. In addition to the meet and greet each candidate will give a presentation. Please come join us as we take our final steps in this selection process. \nKeni Sturgeon is currently the Vice President of the Pacific Science Center’s Science Engagement and Outreach Division. She is an experienced museum administrator with a background that includes more than 15 years of progressively responsible positions in senior and executive management. Sturgeon holds a Master of Arts degree in Cultural Anthropology & Museum Studies and a Certificate in Non-Profit Management. She is also a long-term faculty member with the University of Oklahoma’s online museum studies graduate program\, where she teaches courses in museum leadership. \nMatthew Cadman is currently the Executive Director of the Numerica Performing Arts Center. He is an experienced educator\, teaching and studying history for forty years\, including 13 years at Eastmont High School. Cadman holds a Doctorate in Education and had a 34 year career in the classroom\, at five public high schools and three universities prior to venturing into non-profit management at the Numerica PAC. Under his leadership the PAC has undergone a reinvigoration. In addition to being a leader in the Valley his family has roots dating back over the last century. \nThursday will be a day of discovery for the candidates and us. They will tour both the Wells House and the Museum. They will meet staff and gain a better understanding of the great programs and events that we do. They will be interviewed by a panel of both board and community leaders. Then they will get to meet the community to wrap up their day. \nThank you for your continued support of this organization.
