SUMMARY:Day of Discovery: Top ED Candidates
DESCRIPTION:On behalf of the board of directors\, we would like to invite you to meet our top two candidates for the Executive Director’s Position: Matthew Cadman\, Ed.D. and Keni S. Sturgeon\, M.A. We are encouraging all members to attend a public “Meet and Greet” at the Museum on Thursday\, August 23 at 5:30 pm. In addition to the meet and greet each candidate will give a presentation. Please come join us as we take our final steps in this selection process. \nKeni Sturgeon is currently the Vice President of the Pacific Science Center’s Science Engagement and Outreach Division. She is an experienced museum administrator with a background that includes more than 15 years of progressively responsible positions in senior and executive management. Sturgeon holds a Master of Arts degree in Cultural Anthropology & Museum Studies and a Certificate in Non-Profit Management. She is also a long-term faculty member with the University of Oklahoma’s online museum studies graduate program\, where she teaches courses in museum leadership. \nMatthew Cadman is currently the Executive Director of the Numerica Performing Arts Center. He is an experienced educator\, teaching and studying history for forty years\, including 13 years at Eastmont High School. Cadman holds a Doctorate in Education and had a 34 year career in the classroom\, at five public high schools and three universities prior to venturing into non-profit management at the Numerica PAC. Under his leadership the PAC has undergone a reinvigoration. In addition to being a leader in the Valley his family has roots dating back over the last century. \nThursday will be a day of discovery for the candidates and us. They will tour both the Wells House and the Museum. They will meet staff and gain a better understanding of the great programs and events that we do. They will be interviewed by a panel of both board and community leaders. Then they will get to meet the community to wrap up their day. \nThank you for your continued support of this organization. You are a critical part of our success. \nWe are excited to see who will lead this organization into the future!

SUMMARY:Wenatchee Stories: A film project by Pioneer Middle School students
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to a public screening and official museum installation of Wenatchee Stories\n \nA film project by Pioneer Middle School students in Brock Hurt’s Avid class sponsored by the Trust for Public Land and the Wenatchee Art Education Consortium. \nScreening will take place at 6 p.m. at the Wenatchee Valley Museum & Cultural Center. Doors open at 5:30 pm.  The event is free and light refreshments will be served. \nThe Wenatchee Stories film project grew out of a desire by Trust for Public Land and Wenatchee Art Education Consortium representatives to provide an opportunity for middle school students to create a video under the guidance of a professional videographer contracted through the Icicle Creek Center for the Arts. Students used the video project as a way to engage in the Wenatchee Community by featuring the stories of local individuals. \nSubtitles include: The American Dream\, The Story of Lincoln Park\, What Wenatchee Means to Me\, Wenatchee elder Lucy Montoya\, Memory Lane\, the survival story of Corina Scrogge and stories from Socorro Herrera\, Tate Mathison\, Warren Scott and Juan Amezcua. \nThe City of Wenatchee and Trust for Public Land have been working on an ambitious multimillion dollar overhaul of Kiwanis Methow Park\, central to the South Wenatchee Neighborhood. Part of the process of developing this park\, is learning about and engaging the current community in the development of the park plan. The film project is viewed as another way to engage the community in the park plan development. \n  \nDuring this residency students: \n\nWorked with professional videographer Amelia Egbert through the course of the school year. \nConducted an inventory of Wenatchee personalities\, both historical and contemporary\, to feature in film\nDeveloped interview questions and queries \nMade connections to historical Wenatchee events to regional\, national and international history\nLearned videography filming and editing techniques\nCompleted a video that will be used for a future field experience for younger students\n\n

SUMMARY:Methow Native Heritage Tour
DESCRIPTION:Randy Lewis grew up with a strong understanding and sense of place within Native American Columbia Plateau indigenous society. Lewis traces his roots to the Wenatchi band. His life experiences includes fishing at Celilo Falls before waters from the construction of The Dalles Dam inundated the Columbia River site\, putting an end to an 11\,000-year-old 9-mile-long indigenous fishery. Besides Wenatchee Heights and Celilo Falls\, Lewis lived with extended family in Okanagan County and Ellensburg. All of those different experiences contribute to the wealth of knowledge he is eager to share. Lewis’ enthusiasm for the history of his people\, the stories of his ancestors and their relation to the surrounding landscape comes from a hope for deeper understanding and respect of ancient cultures. \nHe hopes that deeper appreciation will transcend to how people approach the discovery of Native American artifacts. \nGet your tickets now!

SUMMARY:Environmental Film & Lecture Series: The Garden
DESCRIPTION:The Garden follows the plight of a 14-acre community garden at 41st and Alameda in South Central Los Angeles\, the largest of its kind in the United States. Started as a form of healing after the devastating L.A. riots in 1992\, the South Central Farmers have since created a miracle in one of the country’s most blighted neighborhoods by growing their own food\, feeding their families and creating a community. When the property is sold to a wealthy developer\, the farmers organize\, fight back and demand answers. The film explores and exposes the fault lines in American Society and raises crucial and challenging questions about liberty\, equality and justice.\n\n\n \n\n\nNEW THIS YEAR: Thanks to generous support from the Wenatchee Valley Medical Group\, we will have Makerspace activities at every Environment Film & Lecture Series this year. Fun for the whole family!

SUMMARY:The Columbia Rolls On: A Vision for the Future
DESCRIPTION:Modernizing a treaty to sustain a river and its people into the 21st Century\nSpeaker panel discussion highlights the history\, status and opportunities related to the historic Columbia River Treaty and its renegotiation. Panelists include Chelan County PUD General Manager Steve Wright\, “A River Captured” author Eileen Delahanty Pearkes and John Sirois of the Upper Columbia United Tribes. The program is moderated by Museum board member Sara Rolfs and sponsored by the Wenatchee River Institute and the Cascade Columbia Fisheries Enhancement Group. It is a part of the Wenatchee Valley Environmental Film and Lecture Series. \nEach speaker will share their unique perspectives and stories about how the 50-year-old Columbia River Treaty has impacted river communities and offer insights into what an updated\, modernized Columbia River Treaty has the potential to create in terms of sustaining and restoring the Columbia River and its people during a time of climate change and uncertainty. The treaty is an agreement established 50 years ago between Canada and the United States to jointly manage hydropower production and flood management. While this agreement brought important benefits to the Northwest\, it also caused catastrophic harm to the river’s health and communities on both sides of the international border. \nThe panel discussion is in four parts beginning with Steve Wright’s experiences with the treaty and his ideas for a balanced solution providing broad benefits to the Pacific Northwest. Author Eileen Delahunty Pearkes’ portion of the presentation is titled “Healing the Columbia” and features historical images and details the losses to the river basin as the result of the original treaty. John Sirois shares the historical perspective of the river from a First Nations point of view and talks about the importance of restoring salmon runs above Grand Coulee and Chief Joseph dams. After the three presentations\, there will be an opportunity for guests to ask questions of the panel. \nReception starts at 6:30 p.m.
