SUMMARY:Salmon Bake - A Virtual Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Join us virtually as Wenatchi/P’squosa elder Randy Lewis presents a traditional blessing of water and salmon. One of the Plateau tribes’ most significant ceremonies is the First Salmon Feast\, marking the arrival of salmon to traditional fishing grounds. Lewis\, the great-great-grandson of Sam Miller\, founder of the Miller-Freer Trading Post\, the anchor to the original City of Wenatchee\, will retell origin stories related to the Creator’s calling of a grand council of the plants and animals to help feed and care for the newest of creations: humans. \nWenatchee Valley Museum members are invited to participate in a feast of salmon\, part of the traditional tribal religion in the Columbia Basin that reinforces the central role salmon and water play for Columbia Basin tribal people in your own home.  With a series of videos\, we will lead you through building a traditional fire pit as well as preparing and cooking the salmon.  Randy will then present the traditional blessing live and you are invited to participate via Zoom. \nYou decide on how much or how little you would like to participate\, whether you go all out and build the fire pit or just cook the fish in your oven\, you won’t want to miss Randy’s retelling of the origin story or the moving and sacred blessing of water and salmon. The live blessing will take place at 3:00 pm on Saturday\, October 17th. \nThe videos and Zoom link will be sent in separate emails. \nPlease register here: 61981.blackbaudhosting.com/61981/Salmon-Bake-Virtual and the videos will be sent to you.  The live ceremony will be held on October 17 at 3:00 pm.  A Zoom link will be sent in a separate email.

SUMMARY:Images of America: Cascadian Hotel Author Talk
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we talk to the authors of Images of America: Cascadian Hotel live on Zoom on Thursday\, November 12 at 6 PM. The authors will discuss historic events tied to the Cascadian Hotel\, their research process\, and more! This talk is free\, but registration is required. Please register to receive the Zoom log-in information. \nREGISTER HERE\nBook Description: \nOn August 9\, 1929\, the Cascadian Hotel opened in Wenatchee\, Washington\, the “Apple Capital of the World.” It was (and still is) the tallest building in town. The opening ceremony—featuring a human spider scaling the facade—celebrated the coming to town of a technologically innovative and luxurious hotel that\, for its 42-year existence\, prided itself on quality service. The Cascadian had very strong ties to the community\, apple themes ran throughout the building\, and for years it was the go-to meeting place in Wenatchee. The hotel also served as the starting point for the hospitality careers of several men and women who rose to executive leadership positions in the international Western (later Westin) Hotels chain. \nAuthor Description: \nHelen J. Knowles is an associate professor of political science at the State University of New York–Oswego. This book developed out of her research for Making Minimum Wage: Elsie Parrish Versus the West Coast Hotel Company\, which tells the story of a US Supreme Court case involving the Cascadian. That book will be published by the University of Oklahoma Press in 2021. \nL. Darlene Spargo is the author of three books on local history. Images used come from numerous libraries and private collections.

SUMMARY:People of Our Past
DESCRIPTION:Local history comes alive with the Wenatchee Valley Museum & Cultural Center with our annual People of Our Past program. This educational series showcases actors dressed up as historic figures from Wenatchee Valley history. This year\, we celebrate 100 years of women’s suffrage by highlighting formative women in our community. \n\n\nElsie Parrish: tenacious chambermaid who sued the owners of the Cascadian Hotel over unpaid wages. In 1913\, she convinced the U.S. Supreme Court to establish a minimum wage for women. Join her in 1939 to hear her tale. (Elsie Parrish is portrayed by Amy Edwards.)\n\n\nDr. Minnie Simmons: Wenatchee’s first female doctor. Join her in 1945 to hear about her practice and how Wenatchee welcomed its first female healthcare provider. (Dr. Minnie Simmons is played by Kristy Clare.)\n\nEva Anderson: prominent local educator. She also served as Douglas County School Superintendent\, President of the Washington Education Association\, and Dean of Girls at Wenatchee High School. Join her in 1952 at a speech she prepared for a group in Chelan. (Eva Anderson is portrayed by Julie Kuntz.)\n\n\nBernice Bacharach: a feisty attorney. She was the first and for a long time\, the only female member of the Chelan County Bar Association. Join her in 1988 to hear about her recent case. (Bernice Bacharach is portrayed by Katie Renggli.)\n\n\nSign up to receive the People of our Past videos by email HERE\, or stay tuned on social for more information.\nJoin us at the Wenatchee Valley Museum by appointment to view our featured exhibit “Raising Our Voice: Empowering Women”\, celebrating the centennial of women’s suffrage.
