SUMMARY:Environmental Film and Speaker Series Presents Stewart Udall: The Politics of Beauty
DESCRIPTION:The Environmental Film and Speaker Series presents Stewart Udall: The Politics of Beauty \nOn Sunday\, Sep. 24\, 2023\, we will be hosting a screening of this documentary between 3-5 PM. After the screening\, attendees can participate in a Q&A session with the filmmaker John de Graaf. \nThis feature documentary examines the trajectory of Stewart Udall’s life\, starting from his childhood to his Mormon mission\, his World War II service\, his student years at the University of Arizona\, his time in Congress\, and most significantly his years as Secretary of the Interior and beyond. The program introduces us to the birth pangs of modern environmental politics\, to figures like Leopold\, Rachel Carson\, David Brower\, and John Saylor. \nWe will see how Udall’s ideals evolved\, examine his long fight to win compensation for Navajo Indians and “downwinders” who got cancer from their exposure to radiation during the Cold War without being warned of the dangers\, and we see the relevance to our current day crises. \nAdmission is free for members and $5 for non-members. Registration can be found here.

SUMMARY:First Friday at the Museum: Explore the All the Sacrifices You've Made Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:The Wenatchee Valley Museum & Cultural Center is open and free to the public 4-8 PM on the First Friday of each month. \nCome see our new exhibit All the Sacrifice You’ve Made/Todos Los Sacrificios Que Has Hecho starting October 1\, 2023. The museum is partnering with the Washington State Historical Society on the installation of this new exhibit. \nExhibition participants curated photos from their own family albums and recorded oral histories describing life growing up in the farm worker communities of Wenatchee and Yakima. The resulting exhibition creates a uniquely personal connection between the viewer and the families. It serves as an acknowledgment of the contributions\, resilience\, joys\, and sacrifices made by farm workers from Eastern Washington agricultural regions. \nAll the Sacrifices You’ve Made / Todos Los Sacrificios Que Has Hecho is a collaboration between students and staff from the College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP) at the University of Washington and Borderland Collective\, an arts collective from Texas. \nThe exhibition was created by Borderland Collective’s Mark Menjivar and Jason Reed with CAMP staff and students including Luz Iniguez\, Natalia Esquivel Silva\, Orfil Olmos\, Gabriela Ruiz\, Moises Mendez\, and Alondra Torres. \nLearn more about this exhibit here.

SUMMARY:Bus Tours with Ken Lacy: Grand Coulee Ice
DESCRIPTION:Join Ken Lacy on a tour of the Moses Coulee and Waterville Plateau on Saturday\, Oct. 21. \nPrior to the tour\, between 8:30-9 AM\, Lacy will provide a brief lecture in the Performance Hall of the museum before departure. Attendees will be picked up at the museum at 9 AM\, and dropped off at the YMCA parking lot at 5 PM\, where attendees will need to park their vehicles. Parking at the museum will be designated for those attending the Haunted Museum. \nOver the course of this field trip\, attendees will learn details about the basalt and the floodwaters\, examining how these floodwaters eroded the 50-mile-long Grand Coulee in only 300 flood days.  For comparison\, it took over 5 million years to carve the Grand Canyon in Arizona. \nAttendees will examine evidence of the different basalt flows\, shown in the walls of Moses Coulee. At the Waterville Plateau\, guests will see a field where Native Americans harvested their animals. \nNear Withrow\, guests will see the terminal moraine of the continental ice sheet. The glacier’s forward progress was stalled here\, allowing the glacier to dump hundreds of feet of sediment off the front of the glacier. \nLater on\, Lacy will showcase glacial landforms including kames\, drumlins\, eskers and kettles. \nTour-goers will then enter the mouth of the Okanogan Valley to see evidence of the erosive power of the ice sheet\, an area that was frequented by the actress Jodie Foster. Afterwards\, Lacy will highlight the Grand Terrace\, near Brewster. \nFinally\, guests will look at the volcanic dikes located in Pine Canyon\, following the Columbia River back to Wenatchee. \nTickets are $90 for members and $125 for non-members. Registration is required and can be found here.

SUMMARY:The Last Salmon
DESCRIPTION:The heartwarming short story of The Last Salmon is returning to the Merc Playhouse in Twisp on Oct. 9\, from 1-2:30 PM\, with a special performance coming to the Wenatchee Valley Museum on Oct. 26\, from 6-8 PM. \nBack in 2016\, Ki Gottberg and Casey James adapted Phil Davis’s story of Buck and Spring salmon and their adventures with fellow fish friends\, with delightful dialogue and original music composed by Grammy-nominated songwriter Mr. James. Upon debut\, this production was seen as Merc Playhouse’s best original production. \nThese special encore performances will begin with a prayer from Randy Lewis\, followed by readings from the original short story by author Phil Davis and musical performances from Rebecca Kinney\, playing Spring\, and Andrew Tuller\, playing Buck. \nIn Twisp\, Kristen Kirkby will join the cast after the performance for a lively discussion about salmon and the role humans play in their future. There are only 25 seats available at the Merc Playhouse. \nRegistration for the Merc Playhouse showtime is available here. Registration for the museum showtime can be found here.

SUMMARY:First Friday at the Museum: Opening of the Pocket Full of Dreams - Journeys of Hope Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:The Wenatchee Valley Museum and Cultural Center is excited to announce the opening of our new Pocket Full of Dreams: Journeys of Hope exhibit\, featuring artwork from Guest Curator Martha Flores. \nLast year\, the Wenatchee Valley Museum was fortunate enough to receive funding from the Washington State Legislature\, the Diversity in Local History (DLH) program and hired Dulce Gutierrez Vasquez from the University of Washington to cultivate this exhibit. Gutierrez Vasquez worked with members of Wenatchee’s Latin-American community to gather stories and images to help the museum share a more holistic view of the community. \nWe will highlight five of the ten interviews recorded from this grant in our new exhibit\, Pocket Full of Dreams: Journeys of Hope\, which celebrates the human experience. Visitors are invited to sit down at the table with these individuals to listen and read their stories to learn about the history\, family dynamics\, and cultural heritage that shaped who they are today. \nFunded by the Washington State Legislature\, the Diversity in Local History (DLH) program awards grants for paid internships that support diversity\, equity\, and inclusion initiatives at heritage organizations that increase the stories they tell and the communities they serve.
