SUMMARY:Environmental Film: "Treaty Talks"
DESCRIPTION:“Treaty Talks: A Journey Up the Columbia River for People and Salmon” is a short film chronicling a three-month expedition up the 1\,243 miles of the Columbia River from the sea to its source. Five canoes\, carved and paddled by native and non-native youth\, symbolically represented Columbia River salmon – and the journey honored those salmon that can no longer reach their ancestral spawning grounds above Grand Coulee Dam. The documentary highlights the positive efforts of Columbia River citizens working to restore historic salmon runs. An expert will speak following the screening. The program is free but donations of $5 are suggested. Cosponsor: Trout Unlimited.

SUMMARY:Environmental Film: "Food Chains"
DESCRIPTION:The film reveals the human cost in our food supply and the complicity of large buyers of produce like fast food and supermarkets. Fast food is big\, but supermarkets are bigger – earning $4 trillion globally. They have tremendous power over the agricultural system. Over the past three decades they have drained revenue from their supply chain\, leaving farmworkers in poverty and forced to work under subhuman conditions. Yet many take no responsibility for this. The film focuses on an intrepid and highly lauded group of tomato pickers from Southern Florida – the Coalition of Immokalee Workers or CIW – who are revolutionizing farm labor. Their story is one of hope and promise for the triumph of morality over corporate greed – to ensure a dignified life for farm workers and a more humane\, transparent food chain. Cosponsor: The Washington Sustainable Food & Farming Network. Suggested donation: $5

SUMMARY:Environmental Film: The Big Burn
DESCRIPTION:The Big Burn is the dramatic story of an unimaginable wildfire that swept across the Northern Rockies in the summer of 1910. The fire devoured more than three million acres in 36 hours\, confronting the fledgling U.S. Forest Service with a catastrophe that would define the agency and the nation’s fire policy for the rest of the 20th century and beyond. As America tries to manage its fire-prone landscapes in the 21st century\, The Big Burn provides a cautionary tale of heroism and sacrifice\, arrogance and greed\, hubris and\, ultimately\, humility\, in the face of nature’s frightening power. ALSO: we’ll hear from John Marshall and Jeff Ostensen and see the trailer for Jeff’s North 40 film “The Truth about Wildfire.” Enjoy no-host beer and wine\, popcorn. Suggested donation $5.

SUMMARY:Wildfires and Us Fire Ecology Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Landscape ecologist Paul Hessburg and biologist/photographer John Marshall will lead this tour of fire-prone forest environments. Participants will meet at the museum\, then board a bus that will make two stops for short interpretive hikes near Cashmere and Leavenworth. Hessburg and Marshall will show how repeated wildfires maintain dry forest\, how plants and animals respond to fire\, how topography influences fire behavior\, what the forest was like in Indian times\, and challenges springing from homes intermingled with forest. Participants should bring a lunch\, dress for all weather conditions\, and be prepared to hike up to two miles on rough ground. The tour is an outgrowth of the Wenatchee Valley Museum’s current exhibit\, “Wildfires and Us\,” on display through Nov. 21. Call 888-6240 to reserve a spot.
