SUMMARY:First Friday at the Museum: Opening of the Pocket Full of Dreams - Journeys of Hope Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:The Wenatchee Valley Museum and Cultural Center is excited to announce the opening of our new Pocket Full of Dreams: Journeys of Hope exhibit\, featuring artwork from Guest Curator Martha Flores. \nLast year\, the Wenatchee Valley Museum was fortunate enough to receive funding from the Washington State Legislature\, the Diversity in Local History (DLH) program and hired Dulce Gutierrez Vasquez from the University of Washington to cultivate this exhibit. Gutierrez Vasquez worked with members of Wenatchee’s Latin-American community to gather stories and images to help the museum share a more holistic view of the community. \nWe will highlight five of the ten interviews recorded from this grant in our new exhibit\, Pocket Full of Dreams: Journeys of Hope\, which celebrates the human experience. Visitors are invited to sit down at the table with these individuals to listen and read their stories to learn about the history\, family dynamics\, and cultural heritage that shaped who they are today. \nFunded by the Washington State Legislature\, the Diversity in Local History (DLH) program awards grants for paid internships that support diversity\, equity\, and inclusion initiatives at heritage organizations that increase the stories they tell and the communities they serve.

SUMMARY:Environmental Film and Speaker Series Presents: The Doctrine of Recovery
DESCRIPTION:The Environmental Film and Speaker Series presents The Doctrine of Recovery \nOn Thursday\, Nov. 9\, 2023\, between 7-9 PM\, attendees will have the chance to view this widely acclaimed film\, which won the 2023 Dreamspeakers Feature Documentary award. \n\nSince 1493\, the so-called Doctrine of Discovery has justified the dispossession and decimation of the Indigenous inhabitants of North America and brought us to our present environmental breaking point. The Doctrine of Recovery is an Indigenous antidote to rebalance Earth systems\, restore the sacred feminine\, and ensure our species survival. \n\nThree generations of Tribal women – Casey Camp-Horinek\, Crystle Lightning\, and Juliet Langley Hayes – speak on what has gone unspoken\, and unapologetically expose the influence of founding patriarchs and white supremacy in places most never thought to look\, and in doing so demonstrate the ongoing and devastating formula patterned by the Doctrine of Discovery. \nAdmission is free for members and $5 for non-members. Registration can be found here. \nThe Environmental Film and Speaker Series is sponsored by the Rotary Clubs of Chelan and Greater Wenatchee Valley.
