Curator’s Corner: Coin Collection

Join Collections Coordinator Anna Spencer in Curator’s Corner to see part of the Museum’s extensive coin collection. The collection includes coins from around the world beginning in the 1500s to as recent as the 1950s. Watch to see a glimpse of a 1776 Great Britain Farthing and a USA Columbian half dollar from 1892. The first U.S. commemorative half dollar was minted for the Chicago Columbian Exposition in 1893, the huge World’s Fair held to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the voyage of Columbus to America. The coin features the explorer on the reverse and one of his ships on the obverse. Only 1.5 million were made. Most were heavily circulated and later melted.
