Curiosities from the Museum: Raggedy Dolls – 6/11/2024
Over the years at the Wenatchee Valley Museum, some odd and strange things have been donated to the collection. While there is currently a screening process and procedures for donating items, this wasn’t always the case. We occasionally find oddities in the archives from years gone by with little or no explanations.
For example, this set of ‘Raggedy Annie and Andy’ dolls, which a pair of sisters received as Christmas gifts in the mid-1950s. The younger sister adored her Annie doll, while the older sister – unhappy that she received Andy – was quoted to “drop him in mud puddles and drag him behind her small bicycle.” While these items aren’t beaming with Christmas spirit, I think Andy, in particular, has a very seasonal post-Thanksgiving look – a bit bloated, disheveled, and raggedy, just like the rest of us.
